Vowel harmony: transparent and opaque vowels

چکیده
1. Introduction In linguistic theory, there is a tension between two core aims of the field: theoretical parsimony and empirical coverage of the remarkable diversity and specificity seen in linguistic data. Vowel harmony 1 and more specifically the two phenomena of transparency and opacity in vowel harmony which concern us in this paper provide prime examples of phonological research concerned with resolving this tension. Recent findings and promising new theoretical ideas on transparency and opacity indicate that our understanding of these phenomena is at a critical stage. The crucial future step will be the integration of the new data patterns with insights from theoretical analyses. This would require an improved understanding of the phonetic basis of vowel harmony, the nature and origin of the grammatical forces governing transparency and opacity, and finally an understanding of the organizational principles governing the resolution of these forces within and across languages.

Neutral vowels in sound-symbolic vowel harmony in Korean*
The set of neutral vowels in the vowel-harmony pattern found in Modern Korean sound-symbolic words is traditionally considered to consist of two members: [i] and [8]. Some authors have tentatively put forward the hypothesis that [u] and [y] are also neutral. A corpus study on the phonotactics of Korean sound-symbolic vowel harmony provides quantitative support both for the traditional understan...
متن کاملSchwas in Moro Vowel Harmony
Moro is a Kordofanian language spoken in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. It has a vowel height harmony system that presents an intriguing challenge due to the dual nature of the central schwa vowel. Schwas in some morphemes can trigger vowel harmony, while schwas in other morphemes do not. In addition, schwas can appear with both sets of harmonic vowels within morphemes, raising the issue of wheth...
متن کاملPhonetics and Phonology of Transparent Vowels in Hungarian
1. Introduction Vowel harmony is a requirement by which vowels in a certain domain agree in one or more phonetic features. 1 In Hungarian, the feature subject to harmony is the horizontal position of the tongue ([±back]). In many Hungarian roots, vowels in a word are either all front or all back, as in öröm 'joy', város 'city' (umlaut denotes front round vowels, and acute accent denotes length)...
متن کاملATR Harmony: new typological patterns and diagnostics
Phonological studies of ATR harmony have led to advances in autosegmental phonology, markedness theory, and locality. Nevertheless, many of our theoretical assumptions may have been based on misanalyzed data or non-rigorous typological assumptions. For example, detailed acoustic and/or articulatory studies have shown that transparent vowels are not always transparent (Gick et al 2006, Richart &...
متن کاملTwo Statistical Approaches to Finding Vowel Harmony
The present study examines two methods for learning and modeling vowel harmony from text corpora. The first uses Expectation Maximization with Hidden Markov Models to find the most probable HMM for a training corpus. The second uses pointwise Mutual Information between distant vowels in a Boltzmann distribution, along with the Minimal Description Length principle to find and model vowel harmony...
متن کاملVowel Harmony as a Distributional Learning Problem
Vowel harmony is a class of phonotactic restrictions in which vowels in a language are divided into two or more subclasses, and words must contain only vowels from only one such subclass regardless of intervening consonants. Languages worldwide (Turkish, Finnish, Mongolian, Warlpiri, but not English) exhibit vowel harmony. The opacity of such potentially long distance alternations poses a chall...
